More than twenty talented soccer players are sporting new gear thanks to generous supporters of 4 Worlds United Soccer Alliance (4WU). While Coach Kurt Squier and Coach Erin Barcus supervised at McCoy Park on July 29, 2014, their energetic players selected cleats, shin guards and socks to wear to their weekly “Soccer in the Park” game. Some players also took soccer balls home.
Each Tuesday Squier and Barcus are joined by volunteer players who kick the ball around with New Columbia residents who simply cannot afford to participate in Portland’s “pay to play” soccer programs.
Volunteer player Eric Pence says, “It feels good to see barefoot players get cleats. I bet receiving good gear will fuel their passion for the game.”
It will be a thrill for supporters of 4WU to see the newly equipped kids developing their talent on the soccer field. The goal of 4WU is to bring soccer to residents of alienated communities, giving them a forum to make friends and interact with kids from a variety of cultures.
